Role of a Patent Agent

The role of a Patent Agent is firstly to convince himself/herself that the invention is patentable before spending any time in preparing a description and drawings, and spending the Inventor’s money. Therefore, a Patent Agent wants to do a patentability search early in the process. The role of the Patent Agent is to prepare a description and drawings of the invention that contain sufficient information to enable someone knowledgeable in the field of the invention to build and use the invention and obtain the same results as those promised by the inventor. The role of the Patent Agent is also to draft claims that will enclose broadly and fairly in words, the exclusive right that is to be expected from the invention. The role of the Patent Agent is also to correspond with the Patent Examiner at the Patent Office and respond to the requests and concerns of the Examiner, such that a patent will eventually be granted.
